Eligibility Criteria

Find out if you're eligible to apply for a Habitat home

All prospective homeowners must follow these steps:

  1. Attend an informational session – learn program requirements and receive an application.
  2. Complete and submit the application by the deadline – return completed forms with all requested documents.

Who is eligible?

1st Time Homebuyers - At Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County (Habitat CFC), we partner with families who are ready to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership.

All Applicants must meet our three principal criteria listed below:

  • Need.

    Living in overcrowded, unsafe, or unaffordable housing, or spending more than 30% of income on rent.

  • Ability to pay.

    Total household income within HUD income guidelines according to family size. Two years of steady income with a minimum credit score of 620. No judgements, foreclosures or recent bankruptcies.

  • Willingness to partner.

    After acceptance into the program, the future homeowners will work alongside Habitat by volunteering to build (partnership equity), attending homebuyer education classes, and participating in community events.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
  • Must live or work in Coastal Fairfield County area for 1 year and in the State of Connecticut for a minimum of 3 years
  • Must a credit score of 620 or higher, and free of bankruptcy or foreclosure for at least 3 years
