Frequently asked Questions

What if it rains/snows?

  • We build in all types of weather all year long! We will do everything possible to relocate you to an indoor task in bad weather, but this may not always be possible, so please dress appropriately!

Where should we meet?

  • Volunteers should meet at our headquarters located at 1785 Stratford Avenue, Stratford, CT 06615 by 8:00am. The volunteer entrance is the door furthest to the left on the building. The workday will be from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.

What time should we meet/how will the day go?

  • Volunteers begin arriving at the warehouse around 8:00am to sign-in and make nametags, complete any paperwork and to help load the trucks if necessary.
  • Our Opening in Bridgeport will begin at 8:30 am and then everyone will be dispersed to the sites in groups of about 10, depending on the task. It is important that everyone is present for the opening/safety talk.
  • Volunteers will drive their vehicles to the construction sites. We strongly recommend carpooling as most sites have limited parking. We have safe parking at the Operations Center.
  • Lunch is around 12:00 and is an hour. It is the responsibility of the group or individual volunteer to make lunch arrangements. We can make recommendations if you’d like to order lunch.
  • You are all welcome to have lunch back at the warehouse where we have indoor plumbing!
  • The day ends about 3:00 pm.

What will I be doing?

  • Tasks you can anticipate doing: painting, siding, rough framing; trim work, landscaping, fencing.
  • Please note that we work with individuals of all or no skills levels.
  • We have professional project managers who are patient, nurturing and willing to teach.
  • There is a task for EVERYONE regardless of your ability! You can do more than you think.
  • Please note that we keep groups to about 10 volunteers for safety and productivity. We know that you want to be productive and no one wants to give up their day to be standing around waiting or watching.

How should I dress?

  • Dress as stated earlier—for the weather! Also, wear clothes that you do not care too much about. Because this is construction, clothes can get dirty, painted or otherwise ruined.
  • SUNSCREEN, even in the winter!
  • Wear hard, thick soled shoes—work boots are best! NO OPEN-TOED SHOES!!!

What should I bring?

  • IT IS NOT REQUIRED THAT YOU BRING TOOLS, HOWEVER, if you have them you may bring your own. If you do bring tools, please label everything with your name and take them home with you when you leave!

What are my responsibilities as a volunteer?

Habitat CFC relies on volunteers to help us accomplish our goal of providing affordable homeownership opportunities to low-income families in Fairfield County. In order to ensure a safe and productive environment for our work, volunteers are responsible for meeting our expectations to the best of their ability. Conduct that is not in line with the mission and core values of Habitat CFC will not be tolerated. In the event an altercation or dispute occurs on the worksite or in the warehouse, the individual will be asked to leave immediately and may not be allowed to return to work. The Director of Construction will be informed of the situation and ultimately determine the course of action to take.
