Partnership with Avangrid

Last month Avangrid employees put on their hard hats and tool belts and headed to Habitat CFC’s construction site on Ogden Street Extension in Bridgeport with the goal of helping build a “green” house.

This year the Avangrid team helped put up siding on the Sanchez-Salcedo family’s future home as one of dozens of projects coordinated across the globe as part of an International Volunteer Day, in partnership with their corporate partner, Spain-based Iberdrola, S.A..

The family of five is working through the Habitat Future Homeownership Program where they will be putting in 500 ‘sweat equity’ volunteer hours helping build their home and other Habitat CFC homes. When the house is ready and the sweat equity hours are complete, they will be able to purchase their new home with no down payment and a zero percent mortgage.

Habitat CFC and Avangrid have a long history of partnering together dating back to some of the earliest work in partnership with what was then an independent United Illuminating. United Illuminating, now a subsidiary of AVANGRID has provided volunteers over the years to help Habitat build homes in the community. In addition to its employee volunteers building, funds from the Avangrid Foundation will make it possible for Habitat CFC to complete the Sanchez-Salcedo family’s home.

“The Avangrid Foundation is committed to sustainable human and local developments in the communities in which our partners operate as an effort to reduce poverty and enrich the vitality of the places we call home,” said Nicole Licata Grant, Director of the Avangrid Foundation. “Habitat CFC homes are built of high quality and are energy efficient, which lower the family’s utility cost. We encourage and strive to educate our customers about ways to save by being energy efficient with the products in your home. Visit www.uinet.com and find out about the ways homeowners can control and save on their energy bills.”

“Avangrid’s support of Habitat CFC is a great example of how our community partnerships can help reduce poverty and improve the quality of life for hardworking families in need of healthy, energy efficient, affordable housing,” said Stuart Adelberg, Habitat CFC’s CEO. “We are proud to have the utility company be part of our work and look forward to seeing Avangrid’s employees volunteering at our construction sites again soon!”
