Giving Day March 5th, 2015
With a small donation of $10 or more on Giving Day (March 5th) you can help families like the Shaw family who moved into their Habitat CFC home in December 2014. Giving Day is a one-day event powered by Fairfield County’s Community Foundation. You can show your support to HabitatCFC by making a donation at our donation page https://fcgives.org/#npo/habitat-for-humanity-of-coastal-fairfield-county. There are cash prizes for the organization with the most unique donors, and the highest amount raised, winning up to $25,000! Our goal is to provide for the community, and we can’t do it without you, participate and donate to a great cause!
Read more about the Shaw family’s story…
Just few years ago, Dale and Marie Shaw watched from their apartment window as Habitat for Humanity CFC built a new home right across the busy East Main Street. They always dreamed of raising their two children in a nice house with a backyard for them to play in. The Shaw’s saw signs for Habitat posted around their neighborhood, and considered applying but were hesitant.
After some debate, Dale and Marie applied and were accepted as future homeowners. Coincidentally their home was being built on the overgrown lot next door to the house they watched get built not long before.
Dale moved from Jamaica to Bridgeport at age 12, which is when he and Marie met and fell in love. Marie graduated from Bullard-Havens and began working at an architectural firm where she remains employed for 10+ years. Dale continued working with school age children in the after school Lighthouse program, going on to become a classroom assistant for a special education teacher. Although Dale loved teaching children he enlisted in the Marines at age 20, and after his honorable discharge, he now devotes his time to his family while working for Habitat.
School comes first in the Shaw home and both the Shaw children are excellent students. Salina, age 7 and Anthony, age 8 are bright, young children who are excited to be living in their new home. They each have their own room and personal space to focus on schoolwork, as well as yard space to relieve stress and get exercise, unlike the restricting front porch they used to have. Most importantly, the family has found stability and solidified a foundation for years to come. Dale finished his sweat equity of 500 hours very early on and continues to keep his promise by working on other Habitat homes like they were his own.
