Hoops for Habitat was a slam-dunk!
This year’s 6th Annual Youth United Hoops for Habitat basketball competition turned out a great success. Held at the McGivney center on Saturday March 6th, the event was put on by Habitat for Humanity CFC’s Youth United Members, and attracted many different names and faces of all ages. All the proceeds went directly into funding the Youth United’s 4th sponsored Habitat for Humanity home in Bridgeport.
The event started off in the a.m. with the women’s scrimmages, moving into the kids scoring competition where each grade group had to score as many baskets as they could within the allotted time. The grades ranged from elementary school (1-5), to middle school (6-8). Other events that took place were the Bridgeport Boys Choir performance, a basketball clinic from former LA Laker, Wes Mathews, another scrimmage between college and high school players, as well as another scoring competition.
Habitat CFC’s Youth United Group is only 1 of 3 nationally to receive an award, so a very exciting and memorable moment of the event was when State Farm presented a check for a matching grant of $10,000 to Habitat CFC. Youth United President, Tamya Olufowobi, spoke on behalf of the group.
Mayor Finch also made an appearance and introduced himself to everyone at the event, old and young. And finally the event ended with multiple raffles adding up to 33 total items, the highlight prize being 4 Harlem Globetrotters tickets, and an official, autographed basketball from Harlem Globetrotter “Buckets Blake” amongst others.
Hoops for Habitat is a unique community driven fundraiser, and since its inception has been an uplifting and positive experience that resonates with everyone involved. It’s a simple concept that has and continues to bring people together, and we hope to see more to come for next year!

“Women Build” Zumbathon Event was a Hit!
On behalf of Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County, we would like to thank the 60+ attendees as well as the Zumba instructors from Hartford and Fairfield County who joined us at INTENSITY Fitness on March 8th in Norwalk for our first ever 2015 Women Build Zumbathon!
“Women Build” is Habitat for Humanity’s program for women looking to get involved in their community building homes for families in need while advocating for simple, decent, affordable housing. Instructors came out, Zumbathoners came out, and the fun followed! Thanks to all, the effort raised much needed funding for Women Build’s start on the building of their 11th Habitat home!
This event was a huge success and could not have been accomplished without all of your help and support. Habitat CFC thanks you and we hope to see you next year!
