Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County’s (Habitat CFC) Youth United will hold a Groundbreaking Ceremony on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. (rain or shine) at 84 Maple Street, Bridgeport, Connecticut, the future site of the youth group’s fourth single-family home for the Pamphile family.

The Pamphile family learned about Habitat CFC’s home ownership program in 2013. Wesley and his wife, Hattie, have four children ages 5-12. Before their acceptance into the Habitat homeownership program, the Pamphiles lived in one of the city’s housing projects in a substandard, two-bedroom apartment with black mold. For the family, it was unhealthy to stay indoors and not the best environment to raise the children. Their new home will be built with safe, energy-efficient materials and located within the Eastern Bridgeport Historic District, which has direct access to parks and playgrounds. The funds for the home’s building materials were raised by members of Youth United through car washes, making and selling craft items, bottle/can-recycling program, and a basketball scoring contest.

“It is fitting that the next Youth United home will be built for the Pamphile family. Wesley, Hattie and the kids were instrumental in our fundraising for this home as well as getting Kohl’s involved in our activities,” said Tamya Olufowobi, President of Youth United. “It was a win-win-win for everyone,” Olufowobi added.

“In addition to the $50,000 raised by our members, Youth United received a $10,000 matching gift grant from State Farm Insurance Company, which was applied to the donations received for this home,” explained Phyllis Machledt, Habitat CFC Board Member and Co-Advisor for Youth United.

Stuart Adelberg to join Habitat for Humanity CFC as next CEO

Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County Board of Directors will appoint Stuart Adelberg as the organization’s CEO. Adelberg will join Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County (Habitat CFC) in June after he completes twenty-seven years of dedicated work for the Greenwich United Way, where he is currently the President and CEO. Adelberg will replace Bruce Berzin, Habitat CFC’s former President, who retired in April after eight years of holding a number of leadership roles at Habitat CFC.

Adelberg has worked for Greenwich United Way since 1988, starting as the Director of Marketing and Information Technology, moving up to Director of Community Planning and Agency Relations. In 1996, he was promoted to Senior Vice President at both the Greenwich and Stamford United Ways, and since 1999, he has served as the President and CEO.

During his time at United Way, Adelberg helped lead the Greenwich United Way through the transformation from a traditional United Way heavily reliant on corporate and workplace giving campaigns to a non-profit with diversified sources of revenue – including the expansion of individual giving programs, grants, major gifts and special events. He also greatly expanded the United Way’s role in assessing local needs, issuing statistically driven reports and developing collaborative and sustainable solutions.  Adelberg is credited for his leadership in expanding early childhood education, the growth and coordination of local youth services and focusing the community’s attention on the growing need for enhanced mental health services.

Additionally, Adelberg supervised, helped design and author the Greenwich United Way’s Workforce/Moderate Income Housing Study. This report put the issue of affordable housing on the community’s agenda, and helped leaders to begin to understand the costs of not addressing this growing need.  This effort ensured that affordable housing was provided a place of importance in the Town’s Ten Year Plan of Conservation and Development, and led to the creation and proposal of new land use and zoning regulations intended to encourage the development of below market rate housing for varied populations.

“Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County is delighted that Stuart will join our organization. He has a vast amount of experience working with non-profits and individuals in Fairfield County and brings with him a strong understanding of affordable housing,” said T. David Short, Chairman, Habitat CFC Board of Directors. “This year we celebrate thirty years of building decent and affordable housing in Fairfield County. I cannot think of a better individual to lead Habitat for Humanity as we begin our next thirty.”

Adelberg received his BA from Connecticut College, and was a participant in Harvard University’s program in Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management. He received professional training in the performing arts from the National Theater Institute in Waterford, Connecticut and is known throughout the region as an active performer and theatrical director.  A longtime resident of Greenwich, his personal interests include technology, music and theater, gardening and writing. He has maintained his commitment to public service by serving on several boards and advisory committees including the Greenwich Selectmens’ Nominations Advisory Committee, the Board of the Greenwich Arts Council, Greenwich Hospital’s Community Advisory Board, as well as several other arts and community related organizations in Greenwich.
