About Habitat CFC’s Haiti Tithe
When Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County (Habitat CFC) has a local house dedication for an new Habitat homeowner in our community, we also participate in the dedication of a Habitat house in Haiti. This is possible because Habitat CFC tithes a percentage of its local unrestricted funds to Habitat for Humanity International’s (HFHI) work in Haiti. Since the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, we have directed these funds to implementing and supporting sustainable housing change in the Part-au-Prince region where 1.5 million Haitians were displaced into 1,500 camps.
Our Haiti tithe has provided a continuing response to Haiti’s persistent need for decent housing. Most importantly, it has sparked hope in Haitian families who had lost everything but their courage and resilience to persevere forward. We are proud that HFHI has achieved their first phase goal of serving 50,000 families as part of the recovery plan and has now moved into the second phase where the work focuses on long term goals of community rebuilding, training, capacity building and land reform advocacy.
At Habitat CFC’s Annual Meeting on January 25, 2015, we received the Malachi Award from HFHI for our long-term tithe giving to global housing initiatives.
In addition to our organization’s tithe, Habitat CFC employees have volunteered their time in Haiti to help with the building efforts.
